Wouldn't you love to know you are losing weight--or at least, not packing it on--just by doing 3 little things --like taking chromium picolinate, fish oil and calcium?
Those 3 supplements have popped up unexpectedly as fat-fighters with secret powers to keep you thin, in addition to boosting your health in other ways. Here's the latest:
Fish oil burns fat: In a new test, people who took fish oil and exercised moderately lost weight without cutting calories or changing their diet in any way. "We were surprised to see (fish oil) was so effective, especially since these people were still eating whatever they wanted," said Australian researcher Alison Hill.
Specifically, obese people given daily fish oil and told to take a 45-minute walk 3 times a week lost an average 4.5 pounds in 3 months. Those who took sunflower oil and exercised or who only exercised lost no weight. Omega-3 fish oil was the secret passive weapon. .
Hill says "The omega-3 increases fat-burning ability by improving the flow of blood to muscles."
Calcium stops middle-age spread : It's a myth that downing milk and yogurt keeps you thin. But calcium supplements may do the trick as you get older, says a new study at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
Middle-aged women who took over 500 mg of calcium a day gained 27% less weight in a 10-year period than women not taking calcium. And the calcium trimmed more weight from women not on estrogen replacement. The calcium kept off about 10 pounds on average--enough to make a difference in many women between being fit or fat.
Chromium blocks weight gain: Chromium picolinate has long been thought to help convert fat to lean. Now a new University of Vermont study shows that chromium picolinate daily improved performance of a common anti-diabetic drug, sulfonylurea, and reduced the weight gain associated with the drug. Diabetics who took 1000 mcg of chromium picolinate daily along with the drug gained 40% less weight than those not getting the chromium. Also, the chromium-takers had a three times greater drop in blood sugar levels.
Non-diabetics need only 200 mcg of chromium picolinate daily to help control blood sugar, insulin rises and fat production, other studies show. .
